Urban Ag Engagement Manager
The Urban Agriculture Engagement Manager is a hands-on role that will support fresh food access by keeping Portland’s Community Garden program thriving and growing community connections through volunteer opportunities. This role has two key functions: collaboratively assisting Urban Agriculture program staff in managing garden administration and leading volunteer engagement across Cultivating Community’s farm and garden locations.
Responsibilities include:
Community Garden Coordination
- Support garden-related communication alongside the Urban Agriculture Director, including emails, walk-ins, texts, and phone calls
- Respond to needs and requests relating to community gardens, e.g., pest issues, garden tools and infrastructure, and interpersonal gardener challenges
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and competency in working with gardeners from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of English proficiency
- Assist and lead administrative processes for the gardens, including garden registration, orientation, waitlist management and reconfirmation, fall checkout, garden walk-throughs, and summer maintenance
- Coordinate, direct, and organize garden-related in-kind donations, such as snacks, seeds, gleaned seedlings, soil and compost, tools, etc.
- Lead the planning of garden events such as seedling giveaway, fall potluck, and educational opportunities by partner organizations
- Attend garden-related meetings with partner organizations as needed
Volunteer Coordination
- Coordinate with program managers, the Executive Director, and the Director of Urban Agriculture to plan, schedule, and host volunteer work days across Cultivating Community’s locations
- Log and maintain an accurate volunteer database with contact information, hours, schedule, and upcoming events
- Manage and maintain the volunteer@cultivatingcommunity.org email account and respond to inquiries promptly
- Coordinate all logistics and planning for volunteer days – group communication, weather preparations, providing water and snacks, tools, and materials throughout the growing season
- Recruit and engage with volunteers to identify how they can put their particular skills to best use in the organization
- Provide project management support and supervision for Urban Ag interns as needed
- Work collaboratively with CC staff to understand program needs and coordinate training, supervision, support, engagement, and evaluation for all volunteers and interns
Cultivating Community Work
- Proactively establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with staff and partners
- Participate in staff meetings, board meetings, committee meetings, and workgroups
- Participate in training, professional development, and other enrichment activities
- Support cross-program resource sharing, engagement, and events as needed
- Participate in organizational processes, including strategic planning, budgeting, etc
- Submit timesheets and reimbursements on time
- Assist with planning and implementation of CC-driven community outreach activities, such as pop-up picnics, garden tours, partner events, and more
- Assist with resource development projects, including business and community relationships
- Other tasks as assigned
Preferred Experience:
- At least 3 years of gardening experience
- Volunteer and community engagement experience
- Lived or professional multicultural experience, including direct experience with immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking communities
- Experience with Google Suite, including Sheets, Docs, and Drive
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Understanding of Maine’s food system and community partnerships
- Strong attention to detail and organization
- Driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willingness to use the vehicle for work-related tasks with mileage reimbursement
- Strong alignment with Cultivating Community’s Mission and Values
- Flexibility in scheduling and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
Compensation:
Full-time, 32 hours per week with an hourly wage range of $25-28, depending on experience.
